Research On Color - BROWN/Pollution

Upon my Color Journey I researched the color brown and came across many brown things. One that struck my eye was Pollution.

Many other ideas were Italian wolves, dwarves, newspapers, roaches, brown sugar, molasses.

From Pollution which means, waste materials that pollute the air, water or soil. The three main factors that determine the severity are: chemical nature, the concentration and the persistence. I came across the New River that starts in Mexico and meets the US at the Salton Sea which is the largest body of water in the US. My fascination about this polluted river was great!

Since there is a lot of pollution around the world I watched a few documentaries about pollution and which is how I stumbled upon the pollution in the river connecting to the US. Since it is so polluted, when immigrants are found in the river, the border patrol does not even go into the river to get them out. Instead they wait until the immigrants get out because if the Patrols were to go inside they would require 15 shots to prevent them from sickness and disease such as Polio, Cholera, Hepatitis, and many other life threatening diseases. Much of the waste is from Mexico and the US. Since it collects a lot of fecal matter, agriculture waste, and trash it's inhabitable. Many of the fish have died there due to a 4.4 salinity every 100 feet of the Salton Sea. Even Tilapia is barely able to reproduce.

Here are some facts about it:
Attempts to save it -
There have been attempts to save the Salton Sea.
Some were Pipes, to import lower salt levels.
Evaporation Ponds.

Since a lot of bird species migrate from north to south and south to north, A LOT of birds are being affected by the water in this place. Hundreds of birds are found there, about 400 different species. Since it is a major resting stop on the "Pacific Flyway," many birds are getting sick which then results to spontaneous flock deaths. The water is so contaminated that the birds contract diseases, get sick and die.

From there I went to pollution around the world and was able to find a Coca Cola Plant that was causing much pollution in India. There was a group of concerned about their environment since a lot of their water was depleting from the large amounts that Coca Cola was using. They then decided to investigate coca colas doings. One thing they found was dangerous levels known as carcinogen cadmium and lead in a sludge that was dumped in a near-by coconut plantation. Coca Cola told the farmers that the sludge was good fertilizer and since many of the local farmers are poor, they had been using it for the past 3 years. When tests were made, it revealed that the sludge is useless as fertilizer and contained the toxic metals which build up in kidneys with repeated exposure causing kidney failure. The lead found can also cause issues, specially in children causing mental retardation and severe anaemia. Since then coca cola payed $47 million for damage to the water and soil in southern India. The plant only lasted 5 years because the Council there decided to not renew the plants license.

  1. This is a great idea. You might have to tailor it down to less information, but keep the essence.
